As we embark upon a new school year, our team is committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of your school community through Mindfulness-Based Social Emotional Learning (MBSEL).
Thank you!
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness , one in six U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year, while one in five U.S. adults experience mental illness each year.
To raise awareness, discussion, and education about mental health, student leaders across the country are creating innovative approaches to support the well-being of their communities.
In a recent Virtual Field Trip with partners LG Electronics and Discovery Education, students share how they are putting their ideas into action and creating a better future for all using the Six Sustainable Happiness Skills.
At John Marshall High School in Los Angeles, California, students were early adopters of the happiness skill of mindfulness.
By practicing mindfulness with Inner Explorer, students became inspired to begin a mental health initiative called the Wellness Advisory that utilizes daily mindfulness as the foundation for social and emotional well-being.
“Our mission is to support students – we make sure they never feel alone and promote wellness in all aspects,” shares Ava, a Wellness Advisory member.
The Wellness Advisory begins each meeting with an Inner Explorer practice, followed by discussion. Educator Mark Roeder says that having student advocates for mindfulness changes hearts and minds on campus.
“We want to be role models for the rest of our community. When you see others around you practicing [mindfulness], you tend to want to learn from them and their experience,” says Mayán, a Wellness Advisory founding member.
