INTRODUCING MINDFULNESS

TALK ABOUT MINDFULNESS

  • Define mindfulness for your students and talk about what it means to you.
  • Go into detail about the benefits of a regular practice and apply specific examples to your classroom.
  • Encourage a discussion about other ways the benefits of mindfulness can help with everyday challenges.

REVIEW EXPECTATIONS

  • Talk about class rules and safety. Reinforce that these rules still apply when practicing mindfulness.
  • Explain that students will be asked to sit quietly with their eyes closed (or cast downward or looking at the calming image on screen if more comfortable) throughout the practice. Ask that students not be disruptive to others.
  • Use Inner Explorer’s Pre-Launch program to introduce mindfulness to middle and high school students.
  • Elementary, middle, and high school programs have a 1-2 minute journaling question included every day in the 10-minute recording after practice 5. Kindly remind students to pull out their journals before practice begins.

EXPERIENCING CHALLENGES?

  • Pick a time of day that works for your classroom and try to be consistent.
  • Create a predictable start, e.g. dim the lights, chairs facing forward, or introductory phrase like, “We are going to practice mindfulness with Inner Explorer now.”
  • Practice along with your students to model the importance of mindfulness.
